| Racing in Doncaster South Yorkshire author Peter Tuffrey first became
interested in the town's racing history while he was
Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery's Keeper of Fine and
Decorative Arts. While in that post in 1976, he organised
an exhibition entitled 'The Bicentenary of the Doncaster
St Leger', which left a profound impression and resulted
in him eventually producing this book. "Racing in
Doncaster" deals with the history of the race course
itself, the sport's characters, the famous races, the
winners and the cups. The book is well researched using
material from a variety of sources including original
newspaper reports on the races themselves. The
illustrations featured are a mix old prints and
paintings, with postcards from the author's own
collection. From a fine painting of the first ever St
Leger winner, posing with jockey and owner, to the more
recent images of Frankie Dettori celebrating in his own
inimitable style, Peter Tuffrey's new book encapsulates
all that makes Doncaster Races great.
