Google Preview: As the Great Depression took hold, Hammond was challenged to do more and, in 1932, he established Pioneer Homes, cashing in his life insurance to buy several acres of land on the south-western fringe of Sydney to build affordable homes for unemployed workers and their evicted families. The suburb became known as Hammondville. The social history side of this story is fascinating in the way Hammond looked after these people, emphasising home ownership and employment.
