* Written in syllabic verse supplemented by internal rhyme, this story explores feelings of aloneness and inadequacy, along with the redemptive significance of perseverance and genuine friendship. * Bright and quirky illustrations by award-winning artist, Lucy Pulvers, make this narrative pop with colour, as Esmé endeavours to navigate the typical trials and pitfalls of any child’s day. When Esmé finally gives up and submits to being ‘a zero’, her determined friends remind her of who she really is. * Within a satisfying framework of rhythm and narrative refrains, a smattering of more difficult words challenge and stimulate the young reader. A wonderful book for children who feel left out or on the margins, or who simply enjoy language.
