Heart of Gold relates to Alexandra Worth on a personal level as it recounts the events that occurred during her journey of open heart surgery, who is represented by the main character Anna. Anna is a young girl enjoying life and trying to make the most of everything she loves to do in life although she tires very easily. Her mother becomes concerned of the unusual health symptoms Anna is showing and takes her to see a doctor for a check-up. By listening through a stethoscope, the doctor notices a heart murmur and at that point, everything comes to a standstill. A long, hard journey is about to begin for Anna and her family. A few days after the appointment, Anna goes to have an MRI scan referred by her doctor. She goes into a big tunnel where the MRI machine takes photos of her heart. Later that day, accompanied by her family, Anna visits a doctor specialising in the heart called a cardiologist. He delivers the news that her heart is not working properly, meaning that she will require an open heart surgery. After the consultation, Anna starts to think how the surgery is going to go about and what the surgeons will do to fix her heart. Her family tries to keep her as happy as possible. Finally it is the day of her open heart surgery. Anna is admitted to hospital and lays on a bed, where an anaesthetist puts a needle into her arm to make her go to sleep so she will not feel anything during the surgery. Anna is fast asleep not long after the needle and ready for her four-hour open heart surgery. Many noises occurred during the surgery and all the surgeons and nurses are very busy. On completion, the surgeons are very happy with how the surgery went and everyone claps and cheers. It is hard for Anna during the recovery stage, where there are days when she feels happy, and days when she feels sad. She makes many friends whilst in hospital including a girl named Hayley, who also had an open heart surgery. When Anna leaves hospital and starts to get back into her normal routine, she and everyone around her notice a massive difference in her energy levels. She is back doing everything she loves with a brand new heart. Anna and her family cannot be any happier.

21-year-old Alexandra Worth was born and bred in a Queensland little country town, where she came to appreciate the beauty a country place has to offer and thus became an outdoorsy person. She swims five to six days a week, which allows to take her mind off ‘the busyness of life’ and just feel the chlorine run over her skin. Ever since she was a child, Alexandra had always dreamt of writing children’s books one day, which became more apparent during her hospital stay after having a life-saving open heart surgery. The atmosphere of being in a children’s hospital and reading a lot of children’s books as a young girl set the foundation for achieving one of her biggest dreams. Heart of Gold is Alexandra’s first children’s book, with more titles to come. Amy has loved to draw from a young age and often made up games based around drawing to entertain her younger brother and cousins. Her artistic talent was noticed and then accepted into fashion and textile design in high school and later at TAFE. When she became a mother, she fell in love with picture book illustration, and realised what her true potential could be. Amy and has developed a few distinct styles and is always playing with new techniques to expand her repertoire. When Amy’s not doing her favourite thing (illustrating picture books) she’s badly roller skating, or attempting a handstand while her kids whizz around her at great speed.

* A perfect and well-written children’s book that is for everyone, especially to those facing health adversity in life. * Beautifully detailed illustrations that suit the text and emotions of the book. * New author who has a passion for working with children.
