On Your Marks, Get Set… Lead! provides a framework for the journey business leaders need to take to become the people-leader their team would choose for themselves. Before beginning on this journey, it’s essential these first-time leaders understand what people-leadership actually is (and isn’t!) and how this differs from being a manager. They then need to actually make the choice to be a leader. This book shows first time leaders the steps to becoming a successful and knowledgeable leader by teaching them to learn about themselves, their workplace, their teachers and building some new learning tools, and to develop a coaching approach to leadership by transitioning from their previous position where they were the ‘expert’, to their leader role where they are now the ‘coach’. Leaders will learn about the five duties of leadership: * Connecting with your team * Focusing their team on what’s important * Communicating with their team to build common understanding * Developing their team to achieve their individual and team potential * Resolving problems with their team so they can overcome challenges Throughout the book, author Anna Marshall shares useful mental models and relevant frameworks to deepen the first-time leader’s knowledge and understanding of people, teams and leadership. This knowledge will get them (and their teams) off to a flying start in their leadership journey and provide them with valuable resources they will refer back to again and again. Whether the readers work in a small business or a Fortune 500 company, On Your Marks, Get Set… Lead!, will help them nail their first people leadership role by inspiring their team and enabling them to flourish.

Anna has worked with hundreds of leaders, from emerging to Chief Executive Officers, inside Fortune 500 companies, government, family-owned, for-purpose and professional services organisations. Anna now leads the team at People Mastery, a leadership consultancy offering leadership, culture and systems development for mid-tier organisations. Anna also co-leads another special team in the Snowy Mountains of NSW alongside her husband; two gorgeous teenagers and Baxter the chocolate lab. Anna also likes composing haiku, photographing flowers, baking cakes (and eating them) and drinking gin and tonic with her friends (…well with anyone, really!). On Your Marks, Get Set… Lead! is Anna’s first book and draws from her 20 years of experience empowering leaders to be successful.

* Often people choose leadership because it’s the only development option they can see inside their organisation. That doesn’t make it the right option for them. The aim of this book is to make sure that these prospective leaders haven’t made any assumptions about people leadership. A lot of leadership books are about the management activities involved in a leadership role, this book covers what people leadership is and isnt and how to set up your ability to learn, enabling the reader to develop their coaching approach to leadership and guiding them on the 5 duties of leadership. * Too many people move into leadership roles for all the wrong reasons – pay rise, career development, status, sense of obligation. Or are selected by others as the last person standing, longest tenure, least bad applicant in the recruitment process, etc. And this can result in a team being left to suffer the consequences of their leader’s lack of leadership. What if we could ensure that before any person moves into a people leadership role that they understood what it means to BE a people leader? What if they knew what they should DO to ensure that every team member gets what they deserve? What if we could ensure that every team member has an inspiring and enabling leader at work? This book aims to educate, inspire and enable emerging leaders to flourish in their first people leadership role so that they in turn can inspire and enable their team members to achieve their full potential. * This book has at least two different markets: a. For new leaders who have recently started in their first people leader role and are trying to figure out which way is up. b. For CEOs and HROs who want to change their organisational culture, by changing the way their people lead.
