The collection's title, Min Qisas Alatfal, literally means Children's Tales, however these stories are far from your average bedtime read. They are socio-political tales told from a satirical and critical perspective. Naihoum writes about his native Libya, bringing to life a wonderful tableau of characters from Sultans and Faqihs to dervishes, thieves, and beggars. His writing sheds light on the dark corners of power and religion, social injustice and racism. Naihoum's collection contains seven unique and humorous stories, all written in his uncanny, humorous and whirling prose. This short story collection was published in 2002 by Tala Publishers as part of Maktabit Naihoum (Naihoum Library) project.
Naihoum (1937-1994) was a distinguished Libyan writer and journalist. Born in Benghazi, Libya, Naihoum earned a degree in literature, then pursued his passion for writing in Helsinki where, throughout the 1960s, he wrote for the Haqiqa Weekly newspaper. Elnaili is an associate professor of Arabic language and Literature at the University of Alabama. Her research focuses on the stylistics and critical discourse analysis of modern and contemporary Libyan literature and folktales. She has published several articles/book chapters through national and international venues, including Al-Raida, Routledge, and Cambridge Scholars. Elnaili is currently pursuing an MFA in creative writing and literary translation at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has participated in a number of national and international literary translation workshops, including Bread Loaf Translator's Conference 2021. She has two forthcoming literary translations this year: The Leaf with Asymptote and The Oasis Folks with Lamma, as well as a translated collection The Finest Thief & Other Stories with DARF publishers 2022.
