This selection of letters (1938-1985) belonging to a major figure on the post-1945 scene allows a glimpse of his often turbulent life. Scottish by birth, he came to be a key member of the artistic scene in St Ives in the 1950s and 60s. A friend of T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Edwin Morgan, Roger Hilton, Petert Lanyon and many others, Graham never "made" a living from his poetry - the poetry made his life. A dedication and commitment to his craft produced a full body of work during his life, which he lived to the full. These letters (interspersed with poems, drawings and prints) are a testament to the close intellectual and spiritual bonds which nourished his writing over the many years he worked.
W.S. Graham was born in 1918. In 1938, after completing an apprenticeship in engineering, he went to study philosophy and literature at Newbattle Abbey. Starting out in a caravan in Cornwall in 1943, he dedicated his life to writing. His work includes The Nightfishing, Malcolm Mooney's Land (1970) and Implements In Their Place (1977).
