This valuable new self-study guide focuses on the complex and holistic needs of people with profound and multiple intellectual disabilities (PMLD). It recognises that the needs of such individuals are often difficult to address and that problems like challenging behaviour, stress and depression are often overlooked or attributed to their severe intellectual disabilities. The guide helps to develop support staff's knowledge in how to support, communicate, engage and develop appropriate strategies to provide effective, meaningful support. Whilst it is acknowledged that people with PMLD have high support needs, the guide's focus is on the individual and the principle that with the right support everybody, regardless of their ability, has the potential to live a fulfilling and enriched life. This includes being able to make choices, form relationships and enjoy activities. Contents include key knowledge, case studies, reflective exercises, learning points and links to video clips to enable staff to study at their own pace as part of their continuing professional development or to support any qualifying training in the field.
Erren Wheatland is a Specialist Nurse Practitioner and Katie Reid a Healthcare Facilitator at Achieve together. Both have extensive experience supporting people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and associated complex health needs.
